Hello, I’m Michael, and I’m an architect.
Michael Walch grew up in the East Bay Area of California, US. In junior high, he started tinkering at home with HTML and PhotoShop Deluxe on his father's Macintosh Performa, and has since explored a variety of mediums for artistic expression alongside rigorous technical understanding. After a year studying Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Michael decided the life of a programmer was not for him, although this experience still informs his work. In the middle of his undergraduate career, Michael transferred to the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Bachelors of Arts in Architecture in 2005. From there he moved to San Francisco, working for a small architecture firm and building a close relationship with major retail clients like Gap, Inc. and learning a tremendous amount from the sophisiticated clients and high level of responsibility required of a small design practice. Michael earned his Master of Architecture program at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York, graduating in 2010. Since then he has been working in New York City on local housing, institutional, and commercial projects, primarily for non-profit clients.
Michael's interests are various. He is a pop-economist, addicted to Freakonomics, NPR's Planet Money, Malcolm Gladwell, and Predictably Irrational. He enjoys keeping active and healthy, and is a bit of a gym rat. He loves any good story, but best of all the strange-but-true.
